Quest Diagnostics purchases LifeLabs in $1 billion deal, along with additional digital health updates

Quest Diagnostics, a leading provider of diagnostic information services, has recently announced its acquisition of LifeLabs, a renowned provider of laboratory diagnostic information and digital health connectivity systems. The deal, valued at approximately CAN $1.35 billion (USD $1 billion), sees Quest Diagnostics taking over LifeLabs from benefit pension plan company OMERS. Despite the acquisition, LifeLabs will continue to operate under its own brand, with the same management team at its Toronto headquarters. This strategic move by Quest Diagnostics is aimed at supplying LifeLabs with expertise, new ideas, and means to further strengthen its services.

One of the key objectives of this acquisition is to enhance patient services, particularly online appointment scheduling and patient service center processing. By working together, Quest Diagnostics and LifeLabs aim to streamline and improve access to diagnostic services for Canadians. Additionally, Quest Diagnostics has committed to supporting LifeLabs in enhancing data security measures to ensure that Canadian patients‘ health data remains protected within Canada. Charles Brown, President and CEO of LifeLabs, expressed his excitement about the partnership, stating that joining forces with Quest Diagnostics marks a pivotal moment for LifeLabs. He believes that Quest’s diagnostic capabilities and forward-thinking strategies will help enhance access to services and ultimately improve healthcare for Canadians. In a similar effort to improve healthcare accessibility and affordability, Waltz Health, a digital search engine for prescription pricing and reimbursement, has partnered with Reliance Rx, a specialty pharmacy, to lower the cost of prescription specialty drugs. Through Waltz Health’s Waltz Connect program, Reliance Rx will become an in-network option for all specialty medications, providing health plans and self-funded plan participants with reduced costs for specialty medication services.

Timothy Carroll, Vice President of Business Development and Analytics at Reliance Rx, emphasized the focus on providing patients and providers with the best specialty pharmacy experience. Mark Thierer, CEO of Waltz Health, highlighted the importance of bringing transparency, efficiency, and flexibility to specialty benefit management. By leveraging modern technology and marketplace principles, Waltz Health aims to deliver cost savings and improved healthcare outcomes to patients requiring specialty medications.

Lastly, Marshall Health Network, a West Virginia-based academic health system, has partnered with Primefocus Health, a provider-facing healthcare delivery platform, to address regional healthcare issues such as rural care access, obesity, healthy aging, and substance abuse. This collaborative effort will utilize technology and remote monitoring services to oversee patient progress for various medical conditions and deliver healthcare therapies to patients in their homes.

The alliance between Marshall Health Network and Primefocus Health aims to empower healthcare providers to effectively manage outcomes and provide personalized care to patients through an app-based patient portal. With a focus on addressing the unique healthcare needs of West Virginia and rural Appalachia, this partnership will serve 1.4 million residents in 40 counties across the region. By combining expertise and resources, these two organizations aim to revolutionize healthcare delivery and improve the overall well-being of individuals in the region.
